L’autre Dumas (2010)Director: Safy Nebbou

Nobody knows Auguste Maquet, and yet everybody knows “The Three Musketeers”, Everybody knows Alexandre Dumas who wrote the swashbuckling masterpiece but who knows that Maquet is his co-writer? Nobody does, as his name does not appear on the cover. At least not Charlotte Desrives, the lovely daughter of a doctor stagnating in prison for his political opinions. When the lively girl mistakes the shy Maquet for the fiery ex-revolutionary Dumas, begging him to help her to have her father released, the former makes few efforts to put her right. She is so admiring of “him” … She is so pretty …

My year in movies:
Buddenbrooks (2008)Director: Heirich Breloer

In the 1840s, Lübeck is a dominating commercial town on the Baltic coast, and the Buddenbrooks are among the town’s first families. Consul Jean Buddenbrook has two sons, Thomas and Christian, and one daughter, Antonia, called Tony. Even though he dearly loves them, he expects his children to sacrifice personal happiness for the sake of the company if necessary.

It’s pretty long and it’s actually divided in two parts. I found it quite boring but watched it for Diehl.

My year in movies:
Luftslottet som sprängdes (The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest) (2009)Director: Daniel Alfredson

Lisbeth is recovering in a hospital and awaiting trial for three murders when she is released. Mikael must prove her innocence, but Lisbeth must be willing to share the details of her sordid experiences with the court.

I watched this for work reasons and I haven’t seen the first two so I didn’t get a shit out of it, but thought it was incredibly dark and I was always jumpy thinking something awful and gore was gonna appear out of nowhere. It bored me a bit but that was definitely due to the fact that I watched it without subtitles. I’ll promise I’ll watch the first two. The only thing I know for sure is that Noomi Rapace looks BADASS like that.

My year in movies:
Crash Dive (1997)Director: Andrew Stevens

The crew of the nuclear submarine USS Ulysses rescues supposed victims of a boat disaster, but the victims turn out to be terrorists intent on capturing nuclear weapons aboard the sub. Only a former SEAL, now a submarine consultant, can save the crew by sliding aboard while the sub is underwater. The term “crash dive” refers to the sudden dropping of a sub to escape detection, an act that a nuclear sub is never supposed to make. Of course, it comes into play in this film.

I wasn’t paying much attention to it but it seemed pretty awful. The only thing I could rescue is that the dude who played MacDonald was ginger and hot.

My year in movies:
Christopher and His Kind (2011)Director: Geoffrey Sax

In 1931 budding author Christopher Isherwood goes to Berlin at the invitation of his friend W. H. Auden for the gay sex that abounds in the city. Whilst working as an English teacher his housemates include bewigged old queen Gerald Hamilton and would-be actress Jean Ross, who sings tunelessly in a seedy cabaret club. They and others he meets get put into his stories.

I’ve seen it already. To resume I’ll say that I couldn’t take off my head the idea of watching a weird gay spin-off of Doctor Who.
Also Iddo Golgberg appears a couple times…that’s enough for me.

My year in movies:
Vincent van Gogh: Painted with words (TV 2010)Director: Andrew Hutton

Drama-documentary presented by Alan Yentob, with Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role as Van Gogh.

Every word spoken by the actors in this film is sourced from the letters that Van Gogh sent to his younger brother Theo, and of those around him. What emerges is a complex portrait of a sophisticated, civilised and yet tormented man.
The film won a Rockie for Best Arts Documentary at the Banff World Media Festival in 2011, receiving critical acclaim for its fascinating insight into the life of the artist and its unique approach to storytelling.

This is…just PERFECT. Too perfect to be true. Loved it.

For some reason this documentary doesn’t have a poster so that’s why that tiny little image fills as the poster.

Nemesis Game (1997)Director: Jesse Warn

An introspective university student with an unhealthy interest in riddles and puzzles becomes involved in a sinister mind game that results in murder.

I thought it was pretty cool but maybe it was only because I was still falling asleep from the other movie. I liked the puzzles and the crazy lady scared me to death.

My year in movies:
Rasputin (1996)Director: Uli Edel

In 1910s Russia, Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra find their son Alexei, sole heir to the Romanov dynasty, suffering from hemophelia and conventional medicine failing to help him. Alexandra looks into finding holistic treatment and finds Father Grigori Rasputin, a destitute monk who claims he had a vision from the Virgin Mary telling him that the Tsar needed him. Though Nicholas and the royal doctor are both skeptical of Rasputin’s alleged healing abilities, young Alexei quickly bonds with the charleton/prophet, so he remains in the Royal Court. But Rasputin’s constant boozing and womanizing angers the aristocracy and worsens the already unstable tensions between Nicholas and his subjects. With the seeds of revolution brewing, it becomes increasingly apparent that a bad end awaits for the entire Royal Family. Written by Ronos.

Saw it a long time ago, but it was today on the tv and couldn’t resist. I watch it mostly for Alan Rickman; also Ian McKellen does a fantastic work.

When the head of a statue sacred to a village is stolen, a young martial artist goes to the big city and finds himself taking on the underworld to retrieve it.

If you like illegal gambling and underground fights movies you’ll probably love this.My opinion: cliché, cliché, cliché…it did not had stunt doubles, apparently.
